Hair Loss and Alopecia Treatment Overview
Hair loss can be a very stressful condition that affects both men and women for a variety of reasons. While genetic predisposition is a common cause, there are several other factors that can influence hair loss. Hormonal changes, autoimmune diseases (such as Lupus), thyroid disorders, certain medications, increased stress, and vitamin deficiencies can all contribute to hair loss. In addition, certain hairstyles that cause tension on the root (traction) can promote increased hair loss.
When treating hair loss, whether due to Alopecia or another reason, we place the utmost importance on finding the specific cause as it relates to you. At Sadick Dermatology, we are experts in evaluating and treating hair loss, and are considered among the best hair loss doctors in New York. Our treatments range from PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections, light therapy, and specialized topical treatments that combine the latest science to promote new hair growth.
What is the Process of Treating Hair Loss Like?
We begin with a detailed medical history, lifestyle analysis, and medication assessment. From there, we conduct blood work and check for any abnormalities or deficiencies that could contribute to hair loss. Depending on the results, your practitioner may decide to do a biopsy on your scalp to confirm a diagnosis.
Armed with this thorough analysis, our team will customize a treatment plan based on your specific needs. Many times this involves a combination of approaches to hit hair loss from multiple angles and ensure the most comprehensive treatment possible. Ultimately, our goal is to not only stop hair loss, but also promote new hair growth. If you are asking yourself, “How can I stop hair loss?” Sadick Dermatology should be your first resource.
What are the Best Treatments for Hair Loss and Hair Thinning?
We treat hair loss both internally and externally. Based on your medical evaluation, we customize a program that could include:
· Oral supplements, such as Nutrafol and/or Viviscal,
· High dose minoxodil
· Omnilux red light therapy
· PRP / Platelet Rich Plasma Injections
· Specialized, prescription shampoos that contain simulative medication
· Lifestyle and/or medication changes that address some of the root cause of your hair loss
What is PRP and How Does it Stimulate New Hair Growth?
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) has been used for decades in orthopedics and dentistry to stimulate healing properties and growth factors in joints, soft-tissues, tendons and ligaments. In 2006, multiple dermatology studies confirmed that PRP can also stimulate the activity of hair follicles to grow new hair.
The process involves taking a small amount of your own blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the white blood cells and platelets. The platelets are often referred to as “liquid gold”, because they are rich in bioactive proteins and growth factors that help promote tissue repair. These concentrated platelets from your own body are then injected directly into the scalp.
How Many PRP Treatments Will I Need?
While every case is different, we generally recommend three PRP treatments spaced one month apart for hair loss. This allows for an optimal beginning of your treatment, which will then occur once every 3 – 6 months as maintenance.
Is PRP Painful?
Most patients find the injections themselves very tolerable. Post-treatment, patients report mild discomfort at the injection site that is generally treated by taking an over-the-counter pain medicine such as Tylenol.
How Soon Can I Expect Results?
It is important to note that for most of us, hair growth happens at a rate of about ½ an inch per month. Therefore it’s important to remain patient during the process. We are confident that we can deliver exceptional results to the overwhelming majority of our patients, but it is a process that requires commitment from both sides.
