DOT SmartXide Laser Treatment: Greater Customization for Better Results

 In Lasers

For several years now, lasers have been touted as an ideal treatment for many of the signs of aging, including wrinkles, lax skin and sun damage. Now a recent development makes those promises even more appealing with DOT therapy. DOT stands for dermal optical thermolysis which is more or less a fancy way for saying the technique uses light energy to heat up layers of skin, rejuvenating it in the process. That may sound like just about any other type of laser treatment, but what makes DOT so different is its SmartXide CO2 laser.

How DOT Differs

DOT uses a controlled pattern of dots to create thousands of tiny treatment zones on your skin, leaving the areas around each area untouched. That means the treated areas can heal much more quickly and you can still enjoy the benefits of an “all-over” laser treatment that affects every part of your skin. Unlike other fractional laser techniques, the pattern of dots can be controlled to achieve truly customized treatments based on each individual patient’s unique needs. The ability to quickly change DOT patterns during a procedure also makes it possible to effectively treat areas like the neck or décolletage that may otherwise be considered problematic with other techniques.

In addition to providing the same type of benefits as an all-over, traditional laser technique, the DOT technique lets patients heal faster and far more comfortably, making it a favorite among those who’ve tried it.

What It Can Treat

DOT is ideal for treating wrinkling and lines, and it can also be successfully used to treat sun damage that can cause uneven skin tones or rough texture. Plus, because laser energy can penetrate to deeper layers of skin, it can also help promote the growth of collagen and elastin which means you can continue to notice improvements in your skin’s tone and texture for many months after healing is complete.

The DOT Procedure

Prior to treatment, a topical anesthetic or cooling agent is applied to ensure you stay comfortable during the procedure. No sedation will be required. During treatment, the laser hand piece is moved across the treatment area, using custom DOT settings to treat different areas in the most effective manner. Treatment takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Once the procedure is complete, your skin will appear red for a few days – much as it does after a sunburn. About a week or so later, this redness will disappear. At Sadick Dermatology you will be provided with complete instructions on how to care for your skin, including how to cleanse your skin and protect it from subsequent sun damage. Most patients will be able to apply makeup in three or four days following the procedure.
