Sculptra is a long-lasting dermal filler made with poly-L-lactic acid, a substance derived from the alpha hydroxy acid family. This unique injectable filler stimulates collagen deposition in your skin, providing results that last as long as 2 years.
Plastic surgeons and dermatologists use Sculptra to treat lipoatrophy, or facial fat loss, a condition that leads to visible imperfections, such as:
- Nasolabial folds
- Sunken cheeks
- Hollow temples
- Contour depressions
During Sculptra Treatment
Before injection, the skin can be numbed with topical anesthetic to improve comfort. Using a 25 or 26 gauge needle, your dermatologist injects Sculptra beneath the skin at the area targeted for correction. A special technique called “cross hatching” is used to ensure proper placement.
After Your Sculptra Injections
Sculptra produces a delayed result, so your first Sculptra treatment is typically very conservative. When the doctor assesses the results during your next visit (usually after 4 weeks) the dosage can be adjusted accordingly.
The improvement in your skin may continue to improve for up to one year after injection of Sculptra. Beneath your skin, the fibroblasts (cells of the connective tissue) are stimulated to produce new collagen, increasing skin volume and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and folds.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects of Sculptra include discomfort at the injection site, redness, itching, bruising, swelling and bleeding. Small lumps called granulomas can form under the skin and may be resolved with or without treatment by your dermatologist.
