Renova is a topical skin cream that uses tretinoin, the acid form of vitamin A, to smooth away fine lines and wrinkles and improve overall skin texture and tone. Sun damage, including brown spots, age spots, freckles and other skin discolorations can also be effectively treated with Renova.
Renova vs. Retin A
Retin A and Renova are very similar skin care products, as they both contain the same active ingredient (tretinoin). Renova may cause less skin irritation than Retin A, although burning, itching, redness and peeling are possible side effects most likely to occur within the first two weeks of using either product.
Because the primary indication of Retin A is acne treatment, the product generally contains higher concentrations of tretinoin than Renova, which is primarily used to reduce wrinkles and signs of photoaging.
Tretinoin vs. Retinol
It's important not to confuse tretinoin products like Renova and Retin A with skin care products containing retinol. Retinol, like tretinoin, is a form of vitamin A, however retinol doesn't have much affect on the skin.
In order to provide acne-fighting and anti-aging benefits, vitamin A must be converted into its acid form (retinoic acid or tretinoin), so retinol and other forms of vitamin A that have not been metabolized and converted will not improve your skin.
Renova, Retin A and other tretinoin products are available by prescription only, so ask a dermatologist to learn whether Renova is right for you.
