Laser Hair Removal Indications
Laser hair removal can help adult men and women get rid of unwanted hair on nearly any part of the face or body, including the following problem areas:
- Upper lip
- Chin
- Neck
- Cheeks
- Sideburns
- Back
- Arms
- Underarms
- Legs
- Bikini area
Unlike hair removal treatment with intense pulsed light (IPL) devices, laser hair removal can utilize a variety of laser wavelengths that are safe for use on patients with darker or ethnic skin tones.
Because lasers used for hair removal target hair pigment, red, blonde, white and gray hair cannot be effectively treated with lasers.
Laser Hair Removal Treatment
Several different types of lasers are used for laser hair removal, including Alexandrite, Nd:Yag and Apogee lasers, however the treatment process is essentially the same for each.
In order to achieve optimal results, a series of four to six laser hair removal treatments will be recommended. The length of intervals between treatments will depend on your hair growth cycle, but typically facial hair removal treatments are spaced four to six weeks apart, and body hair removal treatments are spaced eight to ten weeks apart.
Laser hair removal treatment may be mildly uncomfortable, especially if an area of sensitive skin is being treated, so topical numbing cream and cooling fans may be used to relieve discomfort during treatment.
Laser Hair Removal Recovery
No downtime is needed after laser hair removal. Some slight redness or swelling that resembles a mild sunburn may occur. If skin peeling occurs, do not pick at or scratch your skin. On the rare occasion blistering occurs after laser hair removal, antibiotic ointment or aloe vera may be recommended, and makeup should not be worn until the skin is healed.
Moisturize, gently exfoliate and protect your skin from the sun after laser hair removal treatment, and do not use any other hair removal methods.
As soon as a few days or as long as a few weeks after treatment, dead hair will push its way out through your hair follicles so that it may be shed before your next laser hair removal treatment. Once your treatment series is complete, smoother skin with drastically reduced hair growth will be apparent.
