Juvederm injectable gel, which is available in Ultra and Ultra Plus formulations, is an injectable filler made of hyaluronic acid and FDA-approved to temporarily correct facial folds and creases. Juvederm XC, a Juvederm filler formulation that contains lidocaine for pain relief, is also now available.
Juvederm Indications
Juvederm treatment is suitable for both male and female patients of all skin types and ages 18 and older.
In addition to correcting facial creases, such as the nasolabial folds (nose to mouth creases) and marionette lines (mouth to chin creases), smoker's lines (upper lip wrinkles), and deep frown lines (11's), Juvederm is also used for the following:
- Lip augmentation
- Non-surgical nose contouring
- Acne scar correction
- Filling under eye depressions
Juvederm is also sometimes injected into the backs of the hands to restore volume and improve the appearance of veiny, withered hands.
Juvederm Treatment
Juvederm injections are quick and easy, especially now that Juvederm XC is available and comes premixed with lidocaine anesthetic.
1 - 2 syringes of Juvederm are typically used during each treatment, depending on the number of areas you wish to treat. The effects of Juvederm are temporary and may last anywhere from 6 months to 1 year. Because Juvederm injections typically last a bit longer than comparable Restylane injections, the cost of Juvederm may be slightly higher per syringe.
After Juvederm Injection
Swelling after Juvederm typically peaks about two days after injection, then gradually decreases over the next few days, along with any bruising and injection site redness that has occurred. Icing the treated area helps reduce swelling and avoiding NSAIDs (e.g. Advil, Aleve, aspirin) will help you prevent bruising.
Poor injection technique can lead to other complications, such as development of lumps, a bluish skin tint called the Tyndall Effect and puffiness due to over-injection. The success of Juvederm injections is very technique dependent, so it is important to seek treatment with an experienced Juvederm injector.
Although the effect of your Juvederm injections will be immediately visible after treatment, the final results will not be apparent until all swelling has subsided and the product has settled about two weeks after treatment.
