Hair Loss in Men

Hair loss (alopecia) is a common problem in men that can start as early as the late teens or early 20s. It often begins with a receding hair line or thinning in the crown and can worsen over time, resulting in complete or partial baldness.

Everyone sheds some hair each day, but if you notice you're suddenly losing significant amounts of hair or missing patches of hair on your scalp, it may be time to talk to a hair loss expert.

Causes of Hair Loss in Men

For men, the most common cause of hair loss is genetics, specifically an inherited sensitivity to DHT, which is a by-product of testosterone that shrinks the hair follicles.  This condition is commonly known as male pattern baldness and it can be distressing for men of varying ages.  Other causes of (or factors contributing to) male hair loss include:

  • Disease
  • Reaction to medication
  • Extreme stress

Hair Loss Treatments for Men

There are many medications your dermatologist can recommend including Minoxidil topical treatment, Propecia or Finasteride.

For some men, especially those with a donor area of hair that hasn’t been affected by hair loss, hair transplantation surgery may be recommended.
