Many over-the-counter moisturizers are ideal for treating dry, rough skin in patients of all skin types, especially those containing urea and lactic acid, however dry skin that is caused by a chronic skin condition, such as psoriasis, may require prescription-strength treatment. For severely itchy skin, topical corticosteroids may also be recommended to reduce skin inflammation in the short term.
