Nearly 7.5 million Americans suffer from psoriasis, a noncontagious immune disease that causes skin cells to grow at an accelerated rate. Using his notoriety as a mentor on Lifetime’s “Project Runway,” Chief Creative Officer at Liz Claiborne, Inc. Tim Gunn has teamed with Address Your Psoriasis to offer style tips and support for individuals with psoriasis.
On the site, those with psoriasis can navigate through videos from Gunn addressing how to embrace a personal style. The videos cover topics ranging from fabric choices, dressing for the season as well as how to accessorize new looks. Featured in the videos are five winners from a recent contest on the Address Your Psoriasis website. Each winner was flown to New York for a personal style consultation with Gunn, which included assistance in choosing a new outfit.
Gunn says he became involved with Address Your Psoriasis because he has a passion for helping others feel and look confident.
“Fashion has always been a great passion of mine,” Gunn says, “which is why I’m so happy to be able to share my style insights and help people with psoriasis embrace their personal style.”
Psoriasis, which is often diagnosed in early adulthood, is usually a genetically predisposed condition, which may be brought on by a trigger such as stress or an injury. This causes the skin to react and often become inflamed and to form “scales” on the skin’s surface, which can be itchy and uncomfortable. This can cause everyday difficulties for some people, including issues sleeping, walking and often working.
Several options are available to combat psoriasis and may include topical treatments in cases of limited psoriasis or phototherapy (ultraviolet radiation) for individuals with moderate to severe psoriasis.
